In the early 1990s, there was no real communion between the worshippers in English at 7am and Yoruba at 10am services in St. Paul's Anglican Church Ishagatedo. This apparent disunity was further exacerbated by frequent petitions against the clergy to the Diocese by the laity, resulting in unstable tenure in the church as clergy were frequently transferred by the Diocese.

The then Public Relations officer of the church, Mr. Siyanbola Oladapo, who had served as the Vicar's Warden, was inspired toward the end of 1997 to consult with like-minded people to form a society with the purpose of intervening to establish and maintain peace specifically in the church.

The first people to register for this new society were Chief Dele Orisabiyi, later Oba Orisabiyi; Princess Kemi Sotuminu, a Barrister at Law; Olori Oluranti Orisabiyi, then a Director of Education in Lagos State; and the Rev. (now Ven.) Gabriel Fawole. They held several meetings, set up the machinery to establish the society, and encouraged others to join. Several names to depict peace were suggested, and the name Apostles of Peace Society, as suggested by Mrs. Oluranti Orisabiyi, was adopted.

Barr. Kemi Sotuminu was requested to draft the constitution for the new society. A character code in the Five Way Test was set for members. The constitution was reviewed in 2011 and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

On January 17th, 1998, Apostles of Peace Society was formally launched by the new Vicar of the church, Arc. Tunde Osho, in his first official assignment as Vicar.

At the reception following the inauguration, the pioneer officers of the society were introduced with Patron Mr. Steve Akinretoye and Matron Chief (Mrs) Patience A. O. Adebiyi.

The first President of the society was Chief Dele Orisabiyi while its initiator, Siyanbola Oladapo, was elected General Secretary.

Rt. Rev. Peter Awelewa Adebiyi, pioneer Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, was installed on January 18th, 2001 as the 1st Grand Patron. Rt. Rev. James Olusola Odedeji was installed as the 2nd Grand Patron in February 2014, and Mama Lydia Odedeji was installed as Grand Matron. The society instituted peace awards to deserving individuals to promote peace. Of the 28 peace awardees to date, Most Rev. Abiodun Adetiloye, the 2nd Primate of the Anglican Communion, was honoured at the service held in St. Paul's Anglican Church Ishagatedo, Isolo, in 2005, while the only Fellow of Peace award to date is Chief Steve Akinretoye.

Apostles of Peace Society has chapters scattered in and outside Nigeria and is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in Abuja, Nigeria.
